Extruded rubber hose construction
What is extruded rubber hose?
Extruded rubber hose is manufactured using rubber extrusion equipment where the raw compound is fed into a hot extrusion head and formed into the circular shape of a hose tube by means of a steel die. The tube is then fed through a braiding or knitting machine where the nylon yarn or steel yarn reinforcement is applied. The braided tube is then passed through a second extrusion head, which applies the cover. Finally the hose is cured by means of a steam autoclave or a hot silica sand bath.
Due to this continuous process, extruded hose can be made in lengths of up to 200+ metres. The main limitation for length is relative to the manufacturers curing process (autoclave capacity) or storage reel diameters.
Extruded hose is most commonly produced with internal diameters ranging from 1.5mm (1/16) through to 51mm (2). As the internal diameter increases the manufacture lengths tend to decrease. In the larger sizes such as 38mm and 51mm it may not to be competitive against mandrel-produced hose, due to this fact, extruded hose is predominately sold in sizes 25mm and below.
Extruded hoses comprise of 3 main components:
  • Tube The tube is the liner of the hose that has constant exposure to the product being conveyed through the hose. The right choice of tube is the most important consideration when selecting a hose. Ensure the hose you are considering is compatible with the product you plan to convey. If you have any doubts please contact Oz Hoze.
  • Reinforcement Nylon yarn is the most common reinforcement used in low-pressure products. Steel yarn can be found in high-pressure products such as steam and hydraulic hoses. The pressure rating of the hose is dependant on the quality, quantity and closeness of the reinforcement braid.
  • Cover The cover is the component of the hose that is subjected to all of the external elements. These elements could comprise of weather, heat, abrasion or chemicals and corrosive fluids, so it is extremely important to take this into consideration when selecting a hose.
Any of the hose components listed above can be custom made to meet your requirements (minimum order quantities my apply) so if you find you cannot match a hose for your needs please contact our sales department with all of the following details so the correct product can be suggested:
1. Inside diameter required (outside diameter if critical)
2. Maximum operating pressure
3. External elements
4. Product being conveyed
5. Maximum and minimum operation temperatures
